The Middle School Band consists of three different bands, the fifth grade band, the sixth grade band, and the seventh and eight grade band. There is also a jazz band that is available for sixth through eighth graders. The band is represented by a band council. There is a president, a vice-president, a secretary, and an equipment manager. The president also chooses a cabinet which contains a secretary of food, secretary of minorities, and moral support. Eight graders have an opportunity to join the Independence High School marching band. [1]
Field Day Field Day is a day where students are forced to pick up litter in and around the school's football field.
CVCC Day The students at IMS are shipped to the Cuyahoga Valley Correctional Center (CVCC)to encourage students not to commit crimes when they are older and to bolster the school's zero tolerance policy towards crime.
Last Day of School Party On the last day of each year the school is put into lockdown with teachers patrolling the halls. Students sit in the auditorium and watch a movie until they are released for the summer.
Field Trips Each grade level is taken on one field trip per year with set field trips for each grade level. 5th Grade goes to sprawling downtown Independence Ohio to visit the ruins of the old middle school which was destroyed by a fire in 1935. 6th grade visits the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to take a seven mile forced march down the bike trail there. 7th graders visit the Ohio Oil and Gas Hall of Fame in Newark Ohio. The 8th graders are taken to Grandpa's Cheese Barn outside of Mansfield Ohio and are given a tour of the store as well as free cheese samples.
